The Harris Garden Center Story
The roots of the garden centers go back to 1879 when Joseph Harris, the founder of
Joseph Harris Seed Co., published his first seed catalog. The seed company flourished, and
in the mid-1930's our Buffalo Road Garden Center was opened. In 1949, Joseph Harris, the
grandson of the founder, became president of the company. Under his direction, the company
became a leader in plant breeding and technology. The companys reputation was based
upon the success of the exclusive varieties of vegetables and flowers it developed.
Joseph Harris always had a positive feeling for the retail garden centers. A second
store was opened in the suburb of Henrietta in the 1950's. A third store was open in the
Penfield -Webster area in 1978. |

Mr. Harris sold his business, the Joseph Harris Seed Co., and retired in 1981. However
when the opportunity to buy back the stores from the seed company arose, he didnt
hesitate. Harris Garden Centers were once again under the direction of the Harris family. Joe's son, Dr. Peter Harris,
is our Chairman of the Board which
helps insure the continuity of our family owned business and values.
